UNDERSTANDING PERONEAL TENDONITIS

Overview

Peroneal tendonitis, also known as peroneal tendinopathy, is when you experience pain or tenderness on the outside or back of your ankle.
The peroneal tendon is made up of two tendons—the peroneal brevis and the peroneal longus—that connect to different parts of your foot. These tendons help you move your foot outward, stabilize your ankle, and support you while walking or running.

The main sign of a stress fracture is pain that gets worse during activity and often stops when you rest. You might also notice swelling on the top of your foot or outside of your ankle, tenderness when touched, and bruising.

How to Treat Peroneal Tendonitis

To manage peroneal tendonitis, you can start by applying ice to the painful area to help with the discomfort. Wearing supportive shoes can also ease the strain on the tendon. Doing stretches and strengthening exercises may also be helpful.

If the pain continues, it’s a good idea to see a podiatrist. They can diagnose the problem and suggest the best treatment options. If the issue is related to how your foot functions, getting a full assessment and custom orthotics might help fix the problem and prevent it from coming back. Additionally, focal shockwave therapy can reduce pain and help the tendon heal.
