Wart Management

UNDERSTANDING WARTS MANAGEMENT

Overview

Warts are skin growths caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. While they are usually painless elsewhere on the body, foot warts can grow inward due to pressure, causing discomfort and pain when weight is applied. They often appear as rough, cauliflower-like surfaces with tiny black dots.

Because warts can spread easily between body parts or people, prompt treatment is important. Our podiatrists emphasize early intervention as older warts are more difficult to remove.

Doesn’t HPV cause cancer?

While some strains of the HPV virus can increase cancer risks, those causing plantar warts are not linked to cancer. Plantar warts often persist for years without spontaneous disappearance, causing ongoing discomfort and pain that prompt treatment could alleviate.

Prevention

There are preventive measures you can take to reduce the risk of getting warts, such as:

N

Wearing sandals or slippers when using communal areas (showers, gyms, poolside).

N

Attending to wounds on the foot promptly.

N

Seeking prompt intervention for development of skin lesions.

N

Keeping skin hydrated and supple.

What options are available?

Treatment for wart lesions will be tailored based on their location and size. During your consultation, the podiatrist will assess and recommend the most efficient approach. Our clinic employs two primary strategies to effectively eliminate wart tissues.

Cryotherapy

N

Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the wart tissue.

N

Blister formation is a frequent occurrence.

N

Discomfort may be experienced after the session.

N

Several sessions are typically needed, usually ranging from 2 to 6 sessions for complete resolution.

Wart Needling

N

One session is usually sufficient for the majority of cases.

N

Recovery time is minimal.

N

Boosts the body's natural immune response.

N

Without causing pain.

Who is this therapy suitable for?

Your podiatrist will assess your suitability for podiatric care after reviewing your medical history and lifestyle. Once the infection is identified, they will recommend the most appropriate procedure. Wart needling is generally safe and highly effective for children and adults, excluding pregnant individuals.
