Photodynamic Therapy (PACT)

Photodynamic Anti-mycotic Therapy (PACT) is a modern light treatment method used to treat fungal nail infections safely and effectively. This therapy uses special photosensitizers to target and eliminate fungal organisms while preserving human cells. It is particularly recommended for individuals with challenging fungal infections due to immune system issues or other medical conditions like diabetes, and for older adults who may be at higher risk.

Who is this therapy suitable for?

Your podiatrist will assess your suitability for PACT after a thorough consultation, considering your medical history and lifestyle. Once the fungal infection is confirmed, PACT therapy will be recommended. Recent advancements have extended PACT’s application to skin conditions like warts and acne, demonstrating its safety and versatility.
PACT therapy is generally safe with no reported negative side effects. It is suitable for patients with underlying chronic conditions, though rare allergic reactions to the gel may occur. Prolonged exposure does not typically lead to adverse reactions.

What happens if you are suitable for PACT therapy?

Your podiatrist will recommend the number of sessions needed based on the severity of your condition. Following instructions is crucial for effective treatment, especially for chronic conditions like fungal nails.

Depending on severity, some patients may require more sessions than others. Additional sessions may be recommended as a preventive measure after the condition improves.

PACT therapy uses a photosensitive agent and visible light to selectively destroy microbial cells, including fungi. Before treatment, the infected nail is debrided to expose fungal elements. Our blue-colored anti-fungal gel is applied to the nail bed, and the PACT machine emits light that activates the gel, destroying fungal cells through a chemical reaction.

Other consideration

Your podiatrist will provide guidance on preventing the spread of the condition to other toes or individuals. This may involve using topical fungal creams at home alongside PACT nail fungus therapy sessions.

PACT nail fungal therapy should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist.
